Sunday saw the running of round 3 of the popular SWIS championship. Upon arrival we were welcomed by a technical track with a few interesting features including a table top onto the straight, gym matt staircase and crossover. The track proved to be a good test of consistency and provided some exciting close racing.
4wd seems to be the best supported class in this year’s championship and this proved to be the case with probably the most competitive field to date. Qualifying was dominated by Tony Bishop setting the best time in all 3 rounds. The battle for the remaining A final spots was significantly closer with Danny Conway snatching 2nd on the grid by 1/10th of a second from Championship leader Chris Ely, 2nd down to around 10th all recording 16 lap runs. In the final it was much of the same with Tony leading from start to finish and the top 3 cars finishing as they had qualified.
2wd was a much more open class with TQ man Dan Murphy having to leave early meaning Danny Conway would start from 1st, Mick Butler eventually coming through to take the win in a scrappy final after Danny was wiped out by a back marker on the final lap dropping to 3rd with Neil Tinsley taking 2nd. The top 3 in the championship did all appear in the A final in the lower spots leaving the championship wide open.
In the micro class it was again Tony Bishop showing a clean pair of heels leading from start to finish in all 3 rounds of qualifying and the final, Duncan Rist would take a deserved 2nd place followed by Steve Alcock in 3rd.
Steve would also take TQ and the win in the iconic class with probably the most humorous race of the day. Steve’s car developing problems around half way through the race getting slower and slower, with the chasing cars unable to stay on 4 wheels Steve managed to hold on to take the win.
Overall a great day for all concerned, roll on round 4 on January 18th.
